We'd been following a successful initiative in Australia, called Every Australian Counts, which was having a huge impact on the level of government support for disabled people and their families. One of their campaigns encouraged their supporters to record themselves talking about their experiences of disability, load them on a central website and then use social media to ensure they got seen. It got us thinking that a similar campaign could be really impactful here in Guernsey on the run up to the November (2013) States debate on the Disability and Inclusion Strategy. But we knew we didn't just have the expertise, or the funds, to do it. As it happened, we asked the Guernsey Community Foundation for help just as Crowd joined their Volunteer Matching Scheme. Serious serendipity. Our members have really embraced the opportunity to tell their personal stories and Crowd have edited hours and hours of footage. We have just started to load the first videos on the matter.gg website that Crowd created for us and our members are ready to share them via We All Matter, Eh? Facebook and Twitter accounts. Making full use of social media is something that charities need to learn, just like businesses, so it has been fantastic to have the experts hold our hands all the way through the journey.

The Education Department commissioned Crowd Media Ltd to launch and deliver a four-month, dedicated social media campaign to help drive a new recruitment cycle for teachers, lecturers and learning support assistants. ‘We want to attract excellent teachers to work in our schools and are often competing against other jurisdictions to try to recruit the best,’ says Kathy Armstrong, HR Business Partner for the Education Department. ‘We know that working in Guernsey has some unique selling points but we were struggling to get these messages across using more traditional means. ‘Using the social media experience of Crowd Media meant that our campaign was up and running very quickly. Ollie and Jo understood what was needed and with minimal instruction were able to translate our requirements into a new Facebook Page, backed up by @GovEducation Twitter feed, which quickly gained momentum. ‘Our new social media sites linked in seamlessly with our website where we post our vacancies and Ollie and Jo were also able to target areas where we knew there was a healthy supply of teachers looking for jobs. New vacancies were quickly posted and promoted when required and a range of feedback analytics provided at key points in the contract. ‘Working with Crowd Media was easy and cost effective but most importantly it provided results.’

We had not even identified a need to improve our company’s online/social presence, let alone how we might go about it. All that social stuff is for kids, isn’t it? Realising the increasing importance of social media in today’s world, with regard to sharing hotel news and special offers with our customers, we knew that we needed to understand how best to use channels such as Facebook and Twitter from a business perspective. We decided that a training course was needed for the sales and marketing team and also certain heads of departments, so we spoke with Jo at Crowd Media to explain what we felt we needed. Jo was extremely helpful and promptly put together a quote for a half day training in the hotel for us as a group. On the day the training was interesting, easy to understand and full of examples of how to and how not to use the various social media platforms. Part of the training was general and the other part more specific to our needs as a hotel, but all of it was delivered passionately and with great enthusiasm. Jo answered all of our queries and provided us with notes from their presentation for us to refer to in the future. Since the training we have been far more comfortable in our use of social media and we now also understand why it is so important in our line of business. It is evident that Crowd have extensive knowledge in all areas of social media and that they are keen to impart this knowledge to as many people as possible.

In 2010, we decided to review our digital marketing strategy. Our website was too static, it didn’t reflect our brand personality and it didn’t take advantage of “stuff” we kind of knew was happening in the digital world. We brought in Crowd Media Limited to educate us (quite literally) on how to reposition our digital presence and utilise tools to engage in online discussions and with clients and interested parties. Any concerns we had about hard-wiring digital media (and ALL that it encompasses) into our marketing strategy were quickly dispelled as Crowd convinced us that the benefits far outweighed any perceived negatives. Our online presence has allowed us to respond instantly to any changes within  our industry, by expressing an opinion keeping our audience informed of any relevant information and, most importantly, what our views are thereon. So (hello sceptics) it’s not just about having a Facebook page and sending a few tweets now and then; it’s about listening, filtering, integrating, broadcasting and engaging. And as we now know, there are increasingly sophisticated tools available to us to do all of the above automatically – OK,  well almost automatically…It’s not a “one size fits all” marketing panacea – it is a complimentary weapon in the marketing armoury and in many ways forms the backbone of strategy. It takes time and patience but with Crowd holding our hand (that’s a monthly retainer to the uninitiated – #justsaying…) we will remain ahead of the curve!

Each campaign launched by a retailer is talked through with them and using the promotional material available is released via Market Buildings social media in a way that makes that campaign relevant to people on the island at the time. Crowd Media have the expertise and marketing knowledge to gear each campaign to suit today whilst maintaining longevity and brand awareness right to the heart of the community. The Market Building's website is innovative, engaging and most importantly, current. The interaction between the website and the live social media is something we had never seen before and ensures that we keep engaged with those members of the public that prefer to view a traditional website whilst giving them an insight into the social media environment without having to actually get involved. In a nutshell, the Crowd Media team are dynamic professionals whose integrity, commitment and passion for 'getting it right' is very apparent. If you're not calling them with information for your marketing campaign they will be at your door to find out for themselves, a welcome proactive approach.

Anyone can build a website, I could have done it myself. It would have been brilliant, it would have been delivered on time, and on budget, and I would have patted myself on the back having saved some money by not engaging experts. Have you ever read such rubbish before? Reality is, anyone can build one, there are lots of people who can build a good one, but there are very few people who can build a great one. I believe we have a great website and we wouldn’t have been recognised by our peers if it wasn’t for Crowd and how they dealt with us, more importantly, how they dealt with me! I am what you would call a ‘pain in the backside’ client. I am clear in my own mind what I want, but I struggle to articulate it, preferring instead to take the negative approach of pointing out what I don’t like, I am not very helpful at all. The bit you see with Crowd is changing a font, adding a nav bar, designing a layout and any good web person can do that. The skill you get with Crowd is an uncanny (almost scarily unbelievable) ability to get under your skin and offer you things that you know deep down you want, but had never thought of and just make you say ‘wow’ it's unseen, I’m not sure it can be taught, and I am glad it wasn’t on their invoice. They understand the pulse of your business and support its development; they get the mood, and they take the passion of the business and touch it with their wand so it suddenly appears as a site, a marketing plan, a flag to wave. Only great businesses have it, Crowd have it in abundance.
