Have you been following Facebook’s intentions to allow cross-messaging between Facebook Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp? It’s set to be another huge step in the direction of Messenger Marketing…

The basics

If you didn’t already know, Facebook owns Instagram and WhatsApp. In the near future, each service will continue to operate as a standalone app, but Facebook is rebuilding the underlying infrastructure so that people who might use only one of Facebook’s properties could communicate with others within the company’s ecosystem. To ease immediate concerns, all of the apps will support end-to-end encryption as well.

“We want to build the best messaging experiences we can; and people want messaging to be fast, simple, reliable and private,” a Facebook spokesperson said in a statement. “We’re working on making more of our messaging products end-to-end encrypted and considering ways to make it easier to reach friends and family across networks. As you would expect, there is a lot of discussion and debate as we begin the long process of figuring out all the details of how this will work.”

The opportunity

Over the last year Crowd have been introducing innovative ways to communicate authentically via messenger apps such as WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger.

Through the evolution of messaging apps speaking to one another across platforms, Facebook is no doubt hoping that it will keep its users even more engaged, providing a merged system as a primary messaging service. By allowing cross-messaging, the company could sell considerably higher user engagement to advertisers within a more personable and affective environment, delivering increased value and ROI.

This exciting development adds further opportunity within the environment of 1:1 communications between brands and consumers, and it’s time for those looking to stay ahead of the curve to start rethinking their strategy.
