Google’s new app Photovine is now available to download but it’s another photo application, What’s new? Well unlike photo apps like Hipstamatic and Instagram, Photovine connects you to new people around the world as well with your friends online. Its also free.
Once you have created your account you take a photograph then add it to a shared caption called a vine. You can create your own vine too and invite others to add it.
Photovine – Rethink Photo-sharing from the Ground Up
After getting to grips with it all during my lunch break I browsed over the vines. ‘Pancakes’ caught my eye because coincidently I had a huge cheese and tomato one placed right in front of me. Perfect. Photovine was able to link my luncheon to Facebook and Twitter as well as the other pancake lovers using the app. I received a few replies from my friends but none from the Photoviners.
Perhaps a better shot will get me more attention. Which means its not the end for Instagram and Hipstamatic. I figured out, you can take a photograph using those apps and upload it with Photovine too.
By making some challenging or humorous vines I imagine it will become quite a laugh among friends and colleagues. It can really get people talking, I would describe it as having a visual conversation.
This is essentially graphic communication, therefore Photovine could be a great tool for advertising. This is already happening with this kind of app, companies contribute and engage with existing topics and themes created by the users, while subtly including images of their products and services to raise awareness of the brand using a fun and personal medium.
Levi’s are using Instagram to do exactly this, “The fashion brand takes fully advantage of Instagram’s unique features to display new products that will be released in the forthcoming collection, as well as images that represent the brand’s personality. Users can start following ‘levisbrasil’ in order to stay updated about the latest stuff, all in a purely visual way.” You can read more about Levi’s here.
The addition of vines now means you can direct your photographs to the people you’re trying to sell to, much like mentioning a user on Twitter. A brand can keep contact with clients by communicating using the vines as well as attract new ones.
It’s only been two days since the app has been released, Photovine has to contend with some already popular applications. It has a lot of potential to be a very powerful app in the world of social media but it is still early days yet.
