Recently, Crowd Media signed up to the Guernsey Work Experience Scheme and our first student to join us was Oli Browning. Oli showed a keen interest in design and all things web and social. As we only had him for two days we threw him right in at the deep end with a few design challenges. He produced some beautiful work and the whole team was very impressed. Oli is a design pro way beyond his years and we wish him well in his future career! – James Bougourd

A few weeks back, I had my work experience. Unlike the UK, we Guerns only get one week of work experience instead of two. My placements were all a bit last-minute to be fair, but nevertheless, it turned out I was going to Crowd Media for two out of my five days. I was told they were new to the Guernsey Work Experience scheme and that the job should be right up my street. And it was.

I’m not going to write a whole diary of my two days at Crowd, but I had an incredible time & met some really lovely people. I met the team from Marlborough and of course James, Simon and Jo from Crowd Media. Both companies made me feel welcome in their office and I immediately noticed how friendly and down to earth everyone was, which was great. James showed me what he usually does on a day-to-day basis as Community Manager for Crowd, and then I went and had a good chat with Simon about web design. He set me up with his MacBook and I was off happily playing around in Photoshop and learning a few new things.

The next day I went to see a presentation that Crowd had put on so that everybody working from Marlborough had a clear idea what Crowd was doing for their company. I was glad that I had the chance to see this because it really showed me what Crowd did on a regular basis and what a marketing agency does apart from just marketing. We went back to the office and I started working on an infographic about communication. Then my phone went off loudly in the office, making me both jump and feel mortified afterwards.

A big thank you is in order for Crowd, for letting me into their office and giving me some great tips for the future. If there is anybody reading this who is my age, don’t waste your work experience. Do a job because you enjoy it, not because of the pay packet. Again, I am so glad that I had the opportunity of seeing a job before totally committing myself to it as it gave me the chance to see if I actually like the job or not, and one week should be plenty of time to find that out. A huge thank you goes to James, Simon & Jo for making me feel welcome and not like some kid who’s just turned up for a week at their offices. I learnt lots of things and had fun in the process. Thanks guys, I’ll never forget my first proper job <3
